Out and About....
the dish on the delish.

I love to travel... whether it's just down the road to Atlanta or all the way around the world to Asia. When I go, I like to eat well!  I try it all, from local grills to heavy-on-the-name gourmet. There really isn't a method to my madness, just cravings for mmm mmm good food!

While I can say I've been adventurous in sampling the local fare (Christmas carp in Prague, anyone?), there are limits (no, I didn't eat the guinea pig in Peru). Sometimes my pesky little dietary restrictions, like gluten intolerance, food allergies, or personal choice, get in the way. Restaurants that go above and beyond in flavor, service, and creativity make the "Favorites" list.

Bistro St. Tropez - Philadelphia, PA

I get to travel so much for work that sometimes all the nice meals make me jaded. Lucky for me, my first foray back on the road after a while lead me to Bistro St. Tropez. (cautionary note... this was a work lunch so there aren't as many photos but I snuck in one!)

This jewel of a cafe on an upper floor in Philly's design center is a "place to be" at lunch. It was packed so call ahead! The decor is light and airy and the menu offers a great variety of French Mediterranean inspired dishes. There are omelets, salads, and entrees to tempt you. The waitress was informed I am gluten-intollerant, and checked with the kitchen on every dish to make sure I was safe. I didn't win with everything, but I was not disappointed.

The dishes I tried were stuffed squid and the Belle Mer salad. For the squid, they were filled with sausage and topped with roasted peppers. Usually I can't have anything stuffed, so this was a wonderfully spicy treat.

The Belle Mer salad was loaded with seafood and the tarragon vinaigrette offered zing without being over bearing. When I asked for steamed milk as dessert - I love steamed milk by the way - our waitress didn't blink an eye. Out it came all frothy and foamy and wonderful.

I can't wait to go back for an omelet next time!

Favorites of the South

The Meeting Place. Chattanooga, TN
Served with a side of chic, this bistro serves consistently amazing comfort food on the Southside.

Restaurant Eugene. Atlanta, GA
This chef deserves his James Beard nomination, and Nick the bartender is amazing.

Table 16. Greensboro, NC
The second restaurant from the Undercurrent team, Table 16 delivers deliciously prepared special orders with grace and style.

Newport's Restaurant, Dallas TX
I'm not sure if Dallas is the South (I think Texas is big enough to have it's own category!) but go for the Blackened Chilean Sea Bass served over green apple slaw with basil vinaigrette.
Favorites from Around the World

Crazy Water. Milwaukee, WI
Roasted pork served in its own mini-Staub dutch oven. Perfect for comfort on a cold night in Milwaukee! And be sure to order the bacon wrapped-dates!

Met Restaurant. Venice, Italy
Michelin starred and amazing. I felt like a movie star while sipping Bellinis in their quietly elegant courtyard.

The best octopus salad ever... and they make cabbage sexy. Save room for their delectable ice cream creations.

Favorite Servers from Everywhere!

Ross and Mallory rock! If you are gluten-free, they take extra special care of you.

Wendy is perky, informed, and goes the extra mile. She made our tapas-style business dinner loads of fun!

The Standard, Nashville, TN
Nate is like the Casper of good servers. So quiet you don't know he's there but always available for a friendly suggestion and help.
